Turntable Tuesday! Dire Straits’ “Encores”

Happy Holidays! It’s Turntable Tuesday because life is too short not to listen to great music! This week on Turntable Tuesday I am opening a brand copy of a November 2021 Record Store Day release called “Encores” from Dire Straits. Crank up your local speaker or get out there and support your favorite live band! What are YOU listening to right now?

The cover of the November 2021 Record Store Day Exclusive Rhino Warner Records vinyl release from Dire Straits. This is one of 6,000 pressings that are still currently available for sale.

If you would like to listen to my companion podcast you can listen here or subscribe for free on any of the streaming services you use. The sticker from the shrink wrap. So far the digital download link is not working and the tracks are not available other than the vinyl copy. As you can see this is a re-pressing of the 1993 Live EP.

It was October 22, 2015 and I was sitting in the parking lot in Durham, North Carolina having just stopped my car in the parking garage next door to the Durham Performing Arts Center. I was headed in to see Mark Knopfler play for the first time. I had never previously had a chance to see Dire Straits or Mark live and this time I was going to be a few feet away from the stage. I could not wait for this show! Before I could exit my car I got a call that confirmed Jimmy Buffett was coming to play Key West on his way to Cuba. Without getting into the details of the call I can say this was a last minute change that was going to require many last minute almost total schedule changes involving many bands across four days and tons of logistics issues. I had most of it already mapped out in my head in a few minutes. Once that call ended I put my phone in my pocket and thought about getting a beer to settle my nerves from the almost two hour road trip and all the work I suddenly knew was ahead before I headed to Key West for two weeks. Now all of that is history as “they” say. I can say it was great fun introducing Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band from a stage in front of a large crowd on a beach in Key West and turning around to shake his hand as he said “That was some introduction!”

I headed inside to the DPAC and found my red seat down front. I say red because the entire interior of this place is mostly red and it must have taken a factory a year or so to crank out all of the carpet and upholstery in the place. As the show started photos were discouraged although I did take one at the end of the show. I have never really understood why musicians, bands, or venues don’t want people to take photos of artists you have contributed thousands of your personal dollars to over the years collecting music and going to live performances at great cost. It is not like anyone is likely to profit from a photo as thousands are all over the internet and everyone has a camera in their pocket now. I do understand not watching a show through a video capture that lasts for long stretches. If you want to video a long segment just go watch You Tube or buy a DVD. If you are using any kind of flash or sticking cameras in someones face well you should not be taking photos. I will leave it there I could talk for days on this topic. I do like to have some photos to share and tell stories with sometimes years later to remember a performance that probably cost me hundreds of dollars at a minimum.

October 22, 2015. Mark Knopfler. My only photo I have of him that came from my camera. This photo is not for re-use without my permission and before you ask it cannot be used to profit in any way. This is a promotional photo only.

Friday, November 26, 2021. Record Store Day. I am in New York City for most of the week and walking down the Avenue of Americas headed to 37th Street on my way to DJ Rock and Soul Equipment and Records to buy a few of the vinyl issues I want for my collection. As usual I am looking forward to seeing Cat and Sharone as I call this shop my favorite vinyl place. When I came into the door I literally took off my coat as the temperature on the street was unusually warm and I needed to cool off from the long brisk walk. The first thing I saw was the Dire Straits “Encore” release and I picked it up as my first selection. I did find some other offerings for the November drop of Record Store Day and even one older triple album from the Stray Cats I wanted. I would call that a successful morning!

The short track list for the EP from the back cover which is mostly empty of text.

Originally released in 1993, following their live album, “On The Night”, this 45 RPM EP has been newly remastered and pressed on solid pink vinyl for RSD Black Friday, and includes a lithograph so I am told but I did not get a lithograph.
