Turntable Tuesday! David Byrne’s “American Utopia”

Hello 2022! It’s Turntable Tuesday because life is too short not to listen to great music! This week on Turntable Tuesday I am opening my new vinyl copy of David Byrne’s “American Utopia.” I just recently saw this show in New York City and I was stunned at how great the performance of this music sounded on a live stage. I am going to tell you all about this album this week on this blog post and my companion podcast.

As the “holidaze” fades and winter comes to most of the northern hemisphere… Crank up your device, enjoy vinyl, or get out there and support your favorite live band! What are YOU listening to right now?

The cover of the “American Utopia” album on one of the rescue piano stools in my collection. I have read that there are complaints of the photo shop on the chains that don’t line up perfectly but who really cares? The photo of the artists on this stage is cool and that is the focal point.

The gate fold of the album with a photo from the stage of the St. James Theater in NYC. The amazing band is coming through the metal chains to rock the crowd as David Byrne crosses the stage. What an amazing performance you should not miss! If you can’t make this show the next best thing is this album!
One of the inserts from this nice package. There are two pieces of vinyl and lot’s of music in these four sides!
There are twenty total tracks as listed in the photo above of the back cover of the album. There are five tracks per side on two pieces of vinyl.

November 28, 2021. I am enjoying some time in New York City for the Thanksgiving holiday. I have already written about this Broadway show on that day that is the work from this album in a previous post.

Given this was such an enjoyable experience I could likely write another couple of pages of thoughts from that day but what I most remember barely a month later is the moments of anticipation, how close and immersed I was in the show, and of course the music. At this point I have just opened the album I purchased after seeing the show so I can go back and enjoy the memories of that show and all of the special moments of being in a small theater with one amazing artist backed by some stellar talent from all over the world.

January 4, 2022. I am cranking up this vinyl album and smiling at the memories of this spectacle I saw performed live. I could easily go see this show again as my enjoyment factor was completely off the meter. I remember wiping tears of joy off my face several times as the music just really connected with me and I felt like I was almost on the stage with the performance being so close. The percussion is amazing coming from multiple instruments in a live setting and it is difficult to reproduce this experience on even an audiophile system of any kind. I will stop right there. If we could reproduce live sound completely perfect in a home listening environment would we even go to a show? I would, but would most people? I won’t answer that question but you can write me and give me your thoughts.

I am not going to dig into this album on this blog post as I plan to talk through the tracks, artists, and other things on my companion podcast. I want to give you an idea of what this package looks like and why you should add it to your collection. I am really enjoying this music and I am still feeling much joy from that live show. This album just keeps bringing that emotion back. Maybe I should play this one on a weekly rotation as David Byrne with his music and talent really makes me smile. I think he does that for many people.
